Boulder Underpass
The 30th+ Colorado underpass is the first fully protected intersection in Boulder, CO, allowing for bicycles, pedestrians and other non-motorized vehicles to cross safely beneath two large streets. This connection allows safe transit from neighborhoods with students and the CU research campus to the main campus at the University of Colorado. The urban design and artwork was led by the landscape architects’ collaborative team, who conceived of colorful murals, concrete formed walls and patterns that would provide an inviting, bright atmosphere inspired by Agamograph art. Working closely with the engineers, the artwork was integrated into the infrastructure using textured and patterned form-liners and panels of formed concrete for signage. The design highlights Boulders’ commitment to prioritizing pedestrian and bike transit and celebrates the diversity and culture of the community.
