Urban Prairie

Located on a challenging urban lot, the design of this residence showcases the use of native ecology and contemporary lines to resolve topographic and circulation challenges. R Design refined the placement and grading of the site with the architectural team and designed a stone courtyard and steel step path that meanders through a grove of Aspen, Yarrow, Potentilla, yucca, cactus and high plains prairie grasses. The grove of trees shade and privatize the courtyard which is flanked by a wall extended outward from the interior that holds a custom water feature. Boulders were placed to provide access to the entry drive and walk. A shade garden of Alium, Hydrangea and Sedum softens the entry providing a brilliant foreground for the elongated views of the flatirons. The use of native and adaptable vegetation significantly reduces water consumption while providing biodiversity and ecology that continually adapts as the site matures.
