Johnson Wales University
This historic campus was the home of several notable institutions including, historically, The Colorado Women’s College and, more recently, Johnson & Wales University. While occupied by JWU, R Design worked with the campus staff and an architectural team to improve pedestrian circulation between three of the most historic buildings, create new gathering plazas at the entrances to the campus offices and student center and design a new Wildcat Plaza to house a large statue honoring the schools’ mascot. As a tribute to the gardens that adorned the site from the time period of the Colorado Women’s College, hedgerows of Dogwoods and Privet were planted to frame future rose gardens. These plants, and others from this era, were used to frame building entries and compliment the rich architecture of the historic buildings. The new plazas create much needed spaces for gathering and campus functions.
